Supreme Mantra Selection
The Root of all mantras
There are millions of mantras with different vibrations, qualities and destinations. The root of all mantras is the
Supreme Personality of Godhead who is the Origin and Creator of all the manifested and unmanifested realities
and of all the spiritual and material worlds. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, being the Absolute Origin of
everything is consequently the Supreme Origin of all mantras. His Holy Names are the Supreme Mantras and are
Superior to all other mantras who are subordinate to Him. In Authentic Meditation we solely think, chant, sing and
write the Holy Names of the Lord for the pleasure of the Lord.

Even between the Absolute Transcendental Holy Names of the Lord there are qualitative differences of
association (Transcendental Vibration) and destination (Transcendental Form). The Absoluteness of different
Transcendental Names of the Lord may look relative but it is not, it is the absolute variety of the Name and the
Lord's creation. The sound of different Names have different Forms related to it and different destinations. All
Names cannot lead to the same goal just as Lord Krishna states in the Bhagavad Gita (9.25):

                                                                 yanti deva-vrata devan
                                                                 pitrn yanti pitr-vratah
                                                                 bhutani yanti bhutejya
                                                                 yanti mad-yajino’pi mam

‘Those who worship the demigods will go to the demigods, those who worship the forefathers will go to them,
those who worship the ghosts will become ghosts and only those who worship Me in My principal and original
Form of Lord Krishna will come to Me’. Shrila Prabhupada explains that if one buys a flight ticket to Moscow, one
can never reach New York. Similarly the Holy Name one chants and the Worship one does determines one's
destination and destinations are not the same even in the absolute consideration.

The Three Kings of All Naam Mantras in Kali Yuga
(1) 5-syllable Haladhara Balarama Mantraraja: ‘Nityananda’
(2) 4-syllable Gaura Gopala Mantraraja: ‘
Gauranga’
(3) 32-syllable Hare Krishna Mahamantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
’

Meaning of the Mantras
‘Nityananda’ means the Supreme Lord Balarama or Nitai who is the constant (Nitya), eternal and complete
personification and the most magnanimous and sole distributor of the supreme bliss, joy and happiness (Ananda)
of pure devotion to the Holy Names and Lotus Feet of Lord Gauranga-Krishna.

‘Gauranga’ means the Supreme Lord Krishna or Govinda (Go) when He assumes the superexcellent mood of His
own supreme pleasure potency Shrimati Radha (Ra) and covers His exquisite blackish bodily limbs (Anga) with Her
golden complexion. ‘Gauranga’ is the most powerful and blissful Word in the whole material and spiritual creation
and in all the spiritual literatures manifested in the past, present and future. This is because
‘Gauranga’ includes the complete potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Gauranga-Krishna and
His own Original Energy and Pleasure Potency Shrimati Radharani.

In the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, ‘Hare’ is an address to the supreme pleasure potency of Lord Gauranga-Krishna
known as Hara or Radha. ‘Krishna’ is the all-attractive and the topmost Name of the Lord and ‘Rama’ means that
the Lord is the supreme reservoir and enjoyer of all bliss and happiness.
Thus God is completely worshiped by chanting the topmost Name of ‘Gauranga’. This word ‘Gauranga’ includes
complete knowledge and realization about God, His Energies and the spirit souls. The whole of creation is
contained within the Name ‘Gauranga’ and nothing exists outside the Name. Thus the Name of ‘Gauranga’ is
described as the crest-jewel and the most principal amongst the most principal Names of God in all of creation
and in all the revealed Vedic scriptures like the Brahma Rahasya and the Atharva Veda.

Hearing the Mantras
The Vedanta-Sutra 4.4.22 says anavrtti sabdat, "one is liberated by sound." Sound is the subtlest element that
we can perceive. Therefore transcendental sound can most effectively enter the mind and heart to reveal the
spiritual reality. When a man is sleeping, he can be awakened by sound. Similarly, the conditioned souls sleeping
in illusion can be awakened to knowledge of God by hearing the transcendental sound of His Names.

Seeing God with the Tongue
People always want to see God, but we cannot see God with our blunt material senses. However, if we please
the Supreme Personality of Godhead with our devotional service, He reveals Himself. The
sastra states that such
devotional service begins with the tongue: through chanting and taking
prasadam. Thus seeing God begins with
the tongue - a rather unusual principle!

When the Holy Names are:
1. Received (heard)
One starts to see things differently.
One's doubts and illusions are destroyed.

2. Given (chanted)
One gains deeper understanding and assimilates the knowledge he has received.
One gains the special mercy of Gauranga Krishna.

Two conditions for the proper transmission of spiritual knowledge:
1. Must be heard with the right attitude, with humility and respect, open-minded, not challenging, with
desire to learn and to understand.

2. Must come from the right source from a genuine devotee, not mayavadi (
see philosophy) or professional
speaker, from one who has controlled senses and sufficient knowledge.

Both the hearer and the speaker must be qualified.
